Art is at the heart of Birmingham's thriving young community with the city's art galleries promoting contemporary culture as well as stunning historical works. As a student, you can't fail to be inspired by the artists' displays enlightening us with their amazing talent.

There is an exhibition on 'How Art is Made' until January 2009 at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery at Chamberlain Square, where students can get ideas about sculpture, jewellery making, pottery and weaving. Diversity dictates that the gallery's 'In Touch' exhibition (until January 2009) takes on a multi-sensory approach with some beautifully thought out sound and light displays. Students also get the opportunity to watch artists talking about there work demonstrating different artistic processes.

Once you've been inspired, why not get yourself down to the Jewellery Quarter where for two hundred years artists have been crafting gold, silver and precious stone into stunning jewellery.

You'll be knocked out by the state of the art digital technology on display at Thinktank. Fantastic activities and intriguing lectures are held within the planetarium where shows take you on a journey of exploration, through our galaxy and beyond (but not quite to infinity).

Still not inspired, still a little too modern for you? Okay, you sticklers for old school fine art, how about taking yourself down to the Barber? No, not for an eighteenth century haircut, but to look at the moving Monet on offer, the powerful Picassos or the gorgeous Gainsborough. The Barber Institute has them all and more.
