Broad Street, Brindleyplace and The Mailbox areas are popular with students, and have lots of places to eat and drink beside the canals. You might like to take in The Living Room, Pennyblacks and Pitcher and Piano for example.
If you're on a budget, your best bets for a cheap night out are the university bars with loads of action and tunes, making Birmingham one of the hottest cities for student nights. Plenty of discounts are on offer for NUS members of course and the union provides popular drinks promotions which keep the cost of a good night down too.
Believe it or not, Aston University is meant to have over 100 pubs within a mile radius of its campus. It's well worth exploring some of these to taste the local brews and sample the atmosphere of a real Birmingham public house. You never know, you might end up working behind the bar at one of them!
As far as entertainment goes then sticking to campus keeps the budget low and the walk home short. At Birmingham City Students' Union they have cheap cocktail nights and poker nights as well as quiz nights that keep everyone together, and these can be some of the best nights out you will have at university.
